Over the past few weeks, Canadians have watched aghast at the froth generated by the ultimately failed efforts to reform the U.S. health care system. Building on eight years of opposition to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, and emboldened by then-candidate Donald Trump’s promise to deliver health care for all that was cheaper and better, Republicans—first in the House, and then in the Senate—launched several bills that floundered and then, each in turn and in different ways, flamed out.

America is facing a growing threat to the health of its citizens. Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to pass the American Health Care Act (AHCA). If the bill becomes law, it could leave millions in the U.S. without health care. And it could have an impact in Canada, too – but not for the reasons you might expect.

The stunning implosion on Friday of the American Health Care Act, the Republican Party’s replacement for the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), may have been a defeat for President Trump and his party, but it certainly isn’t the end of the push to reform health care in the United States.
